I Quit! 08/30/2009

Quitters never Win and Winners never Quit.  After all these years that saying still holds true.  Some of the biggest names in sports and business applied this rule on a constant basis and became hero's to many.  Michael Jordan was actually cut from the basketball team his sophomore year of highschool.........You know the rest to that story!

Quitting is a huge part of the MLM world.  There are several studies out there on this.  Some of these even go as far as saying 95% of people who join a MLM company quit within 90 days!  Why?

My thoughts are this.  Network Marketing has had a rep of giving false hopes on "getting rich quick".  The success stories are shown constantly.  Cars, houses, boats, you name it!  Whats not shown is the hard work, the dedication, the TIME!  The success is real, but so is the work.

For some reason  a lot of people join MLM companies and get pissed off if they're not making millions in just a few months.  So what do they do..... QUIT!  They move on to some other place and try to "get rich quick"   Those people won't succeed at business!  If I'm wrong then please show me how!  I would love to start a business today and be a millionaire in a month!

What I'm saying here is Network Marketing is get rich slow.  Its great!  You own your own business for usually less than $1000 and then you begin to build.  Once you've built your small empire, you then show others how to do the some thing!  Everybody can win!  IT JUST TAKES TIME!

Whats the difference between buying a MLM business and a lets say a franchise. You're telling me that same quitter is going to buy a restaurant for on the low end $250,000 and then quit after a few months because its not making any money.  Most restaurant franchises take 5 to 7 years before they're considered profitable, and most people are willing to stick it out.  I take my same $1000 investment the same way!

I'm not saying I never have thought about quitting....You kidding me?!?!  Many of times!  I chose not too.  Better yet I REFUSED to!  If my mind is made up, failure is not an option!  If one plan fails try something else.  If that plan fails, try something else, so on and so on.  I tell new prospects right away on my websites, that this is no picnic.  This is a business.  This is work. It just takes some dedication and most importantly TIME!

It starts at 7 am.  Another around 10 ish, and then another one just after lunch.  You just sit down to dinner with the family after a long day and BAM!!  2  more!  What is it you ask?  It is the one the only....... "Mass Text", from a some number you've NEVER even seen before.

Most of these are for motivational purposes, which is good, but personally I think they're going about it the wrong way. How many times in one week can you say "this is going to be the greatest meeting ever".  Damn!  I was just at the greatest meeting lastnight....I thought anyway! :)  Tell you what, I have even had some texts from unknown numbers that are borderline insulting to me and my business.

I know we live in a technology driven world, espescially when it comes to communication, BUT leadership is old school.  Leadership does not change!  Leadership starts with yourself.  It starts in your head.  It's self confidence. It's thinking of YOU last.  It even can go as far as helping someone on a personal level when business isn't even the issue.

I know that if you have a huge downline it is basically impossible to communicate with your whole team on a personal level, but there are those 5,10,15 people you do talk to constanlty.  This is where leadership starts.  Don Failla has a great book called The 45 Second Presentation That Will Change Your Life.  In it he dicusses how you must "teach how to teach".  Basically, teach those on your team who you do see and talk to on a regular basis, how to teach those on their team, how to be leaders. Now just imagine a massive team full of LEADERS!  The trickle down effect will be awesome!

Now I don't 100% disagree with this.  Sometimes as a top leader a mass email, blog or broadcast needs to go out, to dicuss future events, changes or even just thoughts you may have concerning your team.  But to get 5 to 6 texts a day from someone I've never met or someone who has not even spoken to me in 6 months........ Thats not Leadership!

Shut Up!  Sounds kind of like a harsh thing to say huh?  It is, and I don't recommend you say to anyone...ever!  This is something I had to start telling myself in my head though.

It took me 28 years to realize this. I don't have the answers to everything!  Whaaaaat?!?!?  Thats right, and Im sure you don't either. :)  It took me this long to figure out that listening to others ideas, and bouncing my ideas off people who have been there and done that is fantastic!

Like you, my mind is going a thousand miles a minute.  Ideas, phone calls, meetings, and of course FOOD! :)  I had a habbit of asking a question, or running an idea by someone and while they were talking, I'd be thinking of the next thing I was going to say or do!  Im sure I've missed so much over these years!  This was brought to my attention by some people that I love very much.  So I finally said "Adam, SHUT UP! And Listen".

Listening is so easy!  I've heard the saying "thats why God gave you 2 ears and 1 mouth".  Its true!  Taking the time to listen is like pulling over on the highway for a second and looking at a map.  You maybe going the wrong way.

I'm not saying that you and I are never right.  Sometimes you have to keep going even when some people say it's the wrong way.  I'll I'm saying is take the time to listen to what others have to say before you decide.

In the business of Network Marketing, we hear this said all the time.  "You can't trust those programs, only the people at the top make the money".   I say true!  BUT, what is stopping them from getting to the top?

Its funny!  The same person who walks out on one of your meetings or presentations screaming "what a scam, good luck suckers!!" , is the same person who is going to wake up at the butt crack of dawn and work their ASS off all day for the "people at the top" of some other corporation! And I'm a sucker?!?!

I'm a big fan of research, and I'll tell you what, this did not take much. It was almost common sense.  Look at all corporations, they're built just the same as your TEAM!   And to mention our business with that bad word called a pyramid!  Come on!  Last time I checked, MLM gave everyone the opportunity to make the same kind of money!  When was the lat time you saw several CEO's running one company?  That is the beauty of Network Marketing....Everyone is a CEO!

Stop building other people's dreams and build your own.

That's right, I said it!  Set Limitations for yourself..........and then absolutely annihilate them!!  I started thinking about this the other night, when I made some financial goals for myself.  It didn't hit me until a few nights later, but I was being very timid.

Now the goal I set was great. I had a plan and a especially a timeline.  I always set timeliness. I believe that's the biggest factor in goal setting.  If you have a timeline you're going to get down and dirty and fight for your goal!  (But please make sure it's in the benefit of others as well.)

That's exactly where I made a "mistake".  I was very modest on my timeline.  I literally jumped out of my chair and went back to the drawing board.  I was even a little mad at myself.  "Why cant I do this sooner"  "I have an idea, a desire, the knowledge and faith to do this!"  "Lets get it done!"

Now I had a goal!  Was my first timeline fine? Totally! But why not make it better.  I love the quote "A goal is a dream with a deadline", it's a great quote that many people use. But try it!  Set your deadline then absolutely annihilate it!

I was so upset with myself lastnight when I forgot to add a quote from a fantastic author, that just about every financial genius has studied thoroughly.  Napoleon Hill says somthething in his book "Think and Grow Rich"  that basically sums up my entire blog from yesterday, and gave me the idea to put a little in my own words (his being much much better!). He says "Every Adversity, Every Failure and Every Heartache Carries With it the Seed of an Equivalent or a Greater Benefit".

That quote really opened my eyes!  Hopefully it does the same for you.

Our whole lives, it's drilled into our heads that mistakes are BAD!  We practice, we study, we learn so when it comes time for the test or some sort of big decision we're ready for our 100%.  Well rarley does the perfect score happen. Right?

Before I continue let me say that practice, studying and learning are awesome and totally need to be done BUT its those mistakes during your practice, studying and learning that lead you to perfection. There's a method to my madness here! :)  Take my career in aviation.  Before I started flying passengers I had to learn to fly.  I didn't jump in the jet I fly today and say "ok board em up, lets go!"  I jumped in a small Piper where I practiced, studied, learned and WHAT?..........Thats right, made MISTAKES!  But, I LEARNED from those mistakes.  I know to watch for those mistakes.  Being "ahead of the game" if you will.  In the airline world, as pilots, we're constantly tested on a regular basis so we're ready for anything thats thrown our way, but starting out years ago we had to first learn.  And to learn you must make mistakes.

The MLM world is the same.  Remember the first time you tried to "recruit" someone for your team?   Excuse the expression but I'm pretty sure it's called "diarrhea of the mouth" :).  You went on and on and probably told that person they were going to be rich!  Well as we know now, that was a mistake.  I can think of sooooo many stupid things I've done in my business, but I learned from my mistakes!  Thomas Edison took 10,001 tries to create the lightbulb.  He was asked if he felt like a failure because of all his tries. He stated that those were not failures at all, in fact he said he figured out 10,000 ways NOT to do it!

Im not saying make mistakes on purpose, I'm just saying they're going to happen, and all we can do is learn from them.  So don't get discouraged about mistakes, just put a big smile on your face and say "damn, Im not doin that again".

What is your "why"?   Let me explain a little bit.  A "why" should almost be called your "because" I think.  Why do I go to the gym?  BECAUSE I want to be healthy!  Why am I busting my butt at work?  BECAUSE I want that promotion.

In the world of Network Marketing you must have a "why".  For some reason the people outside the MLM world are cocked and ready to fire back at anything we have to say.  Having your "why" or "because" will protect you from that BS!

Remeber in the movie 300 when King Leonidas ask the warrior who was unable to battle to raise his shield to see if he could protect himself?  Leonidas tells the soldier that his shield is part of his body.  Your "why" should be your shield!  Without it you may put up a good fight, but in the end the end the person you're doing "battle" with will find that opening and go for the kill!
